"Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him, 'Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed,'" (Deuteronomy 31:7,8).
* With the awesome prospect of leading more than a million Israelites into the Promised Land, Joshua certainly needed these encouraging words from Moses. And although our enemies are not physical armies, as were Israel's, we too need the Lord's promised presence for spiritual battles. How good to know that He will never fail or forsake us.
* In his final words of exhortation and encouragement to his successor Joshua, Moses (a) commands his courage, and (b) promises God's presence. As he faced the Lord's enemies, Joshua would need to know that the living God was with him.
We,too, can feel overwhelmed, lonely, and abandoned. In such times, may the Lord bring to our remembrance this promise of His presence, granting grace to know that it is so.
